Cēsis falls at RSU/Merks, ends 34-0 road streak

SK Cēsis (5-1) thirty four game road winning streak came to an end Wednesday, February 12, as Armands Krauliņš and Uģis Viļums side couldn`t stop the brave RSU/Merks team (2-2). Final result – 66:64 (14:17, 17:17, 15:16, 20:14).

 

RSU/Merks half court defense slowed down Cēsis, limiting their fast breaks. Cēsis players had only four steals while making 17 turnovers.

 

Point guard Asnāte Fomina made a huge steal with 28 seconds remaining, securing the most important possession of the game.

 

Her teammate Kate Aizsila converted it 15 seconds later, scoring the game winning shot, 66-64.

 

Liene Priede and Aija Brumermane missed their final attempts to suffer the first loss since October 19, 2013.

 

Cēsis had won 15 consecutive games before the trip to the Hanza high school. Even more, they had not lost on the road since December 14, 2011, by winning 34 games in a row.

Stat of the game: RSU/Merks turned the ball over 9 times – their best result against the "Top 6" team.

 

Stars of the game: Asnāte Fomina led the winners with 18 points, nine rebounds and five assists for efficiency rating of 16. She scored seven points in the fourth quarter. Kate Aizsila had 15 points, five rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots.
