Asnāte Fomina finishes one assist short of triple-double in RSU/Merks win

Asnāte Fomina: 18 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists

Point guard Asnāte Fomina posted 18 points, 15 rebounds and nine assists to lead the RSU/Merks (3-2) to a 58-50 victory over the Tallinn University (2-4) on Sunday, February 23.

 

 

Nineteen year old player stepped up her efforts in the second half. Playing all twenty minutes, Fomina scored 14 points, grabbed 12 rebounds and dished five assists, sparking a 36-22 run.

 

Despite their size, RSU/Merks players lost the battle of rebounds, 41-47, and struggled to score early in the game.

 

The guests faced obstacles as well. Forward Laura Audere fell ill over the weekend and lost her shooting touch, connecting only 1 of 17 attempts from the field.

 

Kerttu Jallai took over. She registered impressive double-double, after scoring a game high 20 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

 

Tallinn University cut the gap to two points late in the third quarter (40-38 and 42-40).

 

RSU/Merks newcomer Arta Frīdenberga replied with a huge three pointer, while Fomina made some important assists for Paula Langina and Paula Tomsone to run away again.

 

Kersti Sirel`s side tried full court pressure in the final minutes but it was too late.

 

All time series: 5-0 (this season 3-0).

 

Stat of the game: Tallinn University players made 2 of 18 three point shots. They were perfect from the charity stripe, hitting 14 of 14 free throws.

 

Star of the game: Asnāte Fomina finished with her second double-double of the season. She had 18 points on 7 of 11 shooting from the field, a season high 15 rebounds, nine assists, 12 turnovers and two steals for efficiency rating of 27.
