Tartu University (4-3) rocked the headlines on Tuesday, February 26. While men`s team stormed to the first place in the FIBA EuroChallenge Group I action, Tartu women completed their most successful road trip, beating the University of Latvia (5-2). Final result – 63:61 (20:21, 20:7, 7:18, 16:15).

 

After trailing by fourteen points, 26-40, University of Latvia made a successful comeback.

 

Guard Anete Vorma scored 22 points in the last 14 minutes, including 13 points in the fourth quarter. Her last three points gave hope to the University of Latvia, 59-61. Not for long.

 

Kadri Uiga hit a huge three pointer with 32 seconds remaining, to put the Tartu University up by one point, 62-61.

 

Marita Puļļa had an open three with nine seconds left but missed. Uiga grabbed defensive rebound and Janeli Lilleallik split the free throws to seal the game, 63-61.

 

Lilleallik had 17 points in the first half and made three shots off the arc to ignite a 20-3 run in the second quarter.

 

The guests lost all 22 games last season and suffered two heavy defeats in the first half of October.

 

It seems like distant history now, as Kaire Asi`s side have won seven of the last 17 games.

 

They have won four road games this season, winning at AmEst Rapla (70-68), Latvia U16 (62-56), Kolibri Pepsi (53-43) and University of Latvia (63-61).

 

After Monday and Tuesday wins Tartu University improved to 4-3 and is fighting for the play-offs.

 

All time series: 1-3 (this season 1-1).

 

Stat of the game: Tartu University won the battle of rebounds, 47-35.

 

Star of the game: Sixteen year old Tartu center Kadri Uiga finished the game with her sixth double-double effort. She had 11 points, 12 rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocked shots for efficiency rating of 19.
